Embracing Strength: Our Commitment to a Strength-Based Approach

At The Supported Living Group (SLG), our Connecticut ASD Waiver services focus on a strength based and individual specific approaches to help adults (over 18) overcome their barriers and reach their goals.  We utilize comprehensive assessment tools, person-centered planning, and evidence-based teaching strategies that match their individual profiles.  What sets us apart from other organizations is the compassionate and team-based approach of our clinicians and staff. We believe that we can achieve more when we listen carefully, consider all perspectives, and help to build interdependent communities.

Supporting Self-Advocacy

The interdisciplinary support professionals associated with SLG believe that the path to inclusive and integrated communities includes voices from all groups of people.  Unfortunately, people with neurodivergent profiles may not have had their voices heard in the past.  We focus on helping people understand their unique needs and values, their personal priorities and preferences, and their place in the communities of their choice throughout Connecticut. We use the ideas of courage and empowerment to help people to share their perspectives effectively in personal, work-based, and community settings.

SLG’s Commitment to Neurodiversity

Neurodiversity encompasses the broad spectrum of differences found across human brains, celebrating and recognizing the inherent value of these unique variations. Traditionally, individuals with neurodivergent profiles like ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, and Anxiety have been approached through a medical model, suggesting that they must conform to the norms of a neurotypical world. However, the neurodiversity movement, upon which The Supported Living Group's ASD support services in Connecticut are founded, challenges this perspective. Instead, it advocates for the normalization and appreciation of all brain differences, empowering a viewpoint that embraces diversity.

Industry Leading Clinical Support Opportunities

Our Connecticut-based clinical team comprises Licensed Professionals who value personal choice and neurodivergent-affirming care. We utilize person-centered planning partnered with research-based assessment tools to help individuals and their families design care plans that meet their goals. Once the plan is outlined, our clinicians collaborate with team members and the individual to design teaching strategies based on the science of applied behavior analysis. We closely monitor progress along with the individual so that they build confidence in their ability to make gains and overcome barriers.

Our Direct Professionals

Through collaboration with the clinical and management teams, our direct providers help to increase the independent and interdependent skills of the individuals we support.  Life Skills Coaches, Community Mentors, and Job Coaches are critical to our support approach.  Our teams are trained beyond the basic requirements of the roles to ensure that they employ highly compassionate and effective approaches in all of their work.

Social Groups

Social skills are everywhere and deficits in this area often create barriers for autistic people and individuals with developmental disabilities. Highly skilled individuals may not get a job due to poor interviewing skills. Relationships may be hard to maintain if an individual struggles with reading other people’s emotions. Missed social cues in the grocery line may lead to a misunderstanding.  Social anxiety may prevent them from taking a step toward social engagements. With our specialized social-educational services, SLG supports individuals in recognizing their strengths and barriers as they approach their lives including overcoming social anxiety with a values-based approach. Through evidence-based practices, SLG ASD services aim to provide educational opportunities in our customized on-site and telehealth groups across the State of Connecticut.

Social Spaces

Our office locations in Danielson, Bethany and Avon offer social spaces for individuals to come together in areas of common interest.  These state-of-the-art spaces offer art-based workshops, tabletop and role-play gaming, and sensory friendly viewing parties where people can enjoy their space and meet others that may share their interests. We will continue to build and expand on the interest areas of the people we support as well as open our doors to others that may enjoy the experience as well.
